North American bleached board/SBS prices in January remained flat, at $1,000 - $1,050/ton, Wilde reports. All of the major producers (IP, MWV, RKT, G-P, and Clearwater Paper) implemented a $40/ton price hike in mid-January. Reports suggest that while there is some traction in the price increases, it is uncertain whether they will go through, Wilde adds. The hike is driven by a combination of improvement in seasonal demand (unmade orders as of mid-December = 300,000 tons/week against 240,000 tons/week in late-February/early March) and a reduction in supply (closure of MWV's 200,000 tpy No. 2 paper machine at Evadale, Texas, and IP's 140,000 tpy coated boxboard mill in Franklin, Va., by mid-2010).
