Newsprint (30-lb), Wilde reports, rose $15/metric ton in the U.S. East ($545/mton) and $25/mton in the West ($525) during January. Reports suggest that prices vary depending on the buyer size, location, and the sector. The debate now is whether the rally has further go, having brought prices up $100/metric ton from their late summer lows at $435/metric ton. Advertising and circulation continue to remain under pressure. With domestic demand still depressed, North American producers are now looking at emerging markets such as Latin America and India.
