NewPage, Miamisburg, Ohio, USA, will restart PM 63 its Whiting, Wis., mill on March 1, as customer demand has increased and paper inventories have dwindled, according to a report this past week in The Wausau Daily Herald. The machine, which produces lightweight coated publication papers, was indefinitely idled October 12. The news report noted that of the 58 employees affected by the shutdown, 17 transferred to other mills and 41 were on full or partial layoffs, all who will be recalled for the restart. The Whiting operation has two paper machines producing lightweight coated and ultra-lightweight coated papers primarily for magazines and catalogs. Its annual production capacity is about 220,000 tpy. The mill has a groundwood pulp and a thermomechanical pulp operation on site.
