With a 40 percent increase in attendance over last year, TAPPI's PaperCon
2010 reflected increased optimism and market improvements throughout the
pulp and paper industry. More than 1,000 industry professionals were in
Atlanta earlier this week
for this three-day event filled with technical sessions, keynote speakers,
special events, exhibits and networking opportunities.PaperCon's Exhibit Hall included more than 75
companies like Metso, Kemira and EKA Chemicals providing the latest technology,
sustainability and maintenance solutions to attendees. In addition,
two important keynote speakers addressed the crowd. Jim Hanna, Director of
Environmental Impact for Starbucks Coffee, kicked-off the conference on Sunday with an overview of Starbucks' efforts to
reduce its environmental footprint through energy and water conservation,
recycling and green construction. Of particular importance to PaperCon
attendees was Starbucks' aim to achieve recyclability or compostability of
their cups. Also, Nina B. Link, President and CEO of the Magazine
Publishers of America, explored the disruption and transformation of the
magazine industry brought about by technology and changing consumer and
advertising demands. In addition, PaperCon's Sustainability
Forum and Showcase explored "The Science Behind Sustainability" and featured
an impressive line-up of experts from thought-leading companies and
organizations like MWV, Colgate, GreenBlue and NewPage to name a few.
