Freshwater Tissue Co. Mill Will Not Restart

Citing an inability to raise needed funds, Freshwater Tissue Co. reports that it will not restart its Samoa, Calif., USA, pulp mill. Freshwater had hoped to convert the mill to a pulp and toilet paper facility, but was unable to secure the money to do so. Those attempts to give the mill a new life followed an October 2009 announcement that it would close permanently.
In February 2009, Freshwater bought the plant from Evergreen Pulp Inc., which had bought it in 2005 but shut it down when the pulp market declined. Georgia-Pacific Corp. once owned the mill, but longtime owner Louisiana-Pacific Corp. may be held accountable for the cleanup of groundwater contamination at the site.
