Smart Papers, Hamilton, Ohio, has been certified as an eligible renewable energy resource generating facility by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Smart Papers operates a 37.8 MW co-generation power plant at its headquarters northwest of Cincinnati. The certification allows the company to cut its coal use by more than 50,000 tpy, a 50% reduction, and provides a new source of renewable energy to Ohio and the U.S. Midwest power grid by late next year.
Cellulosic fuel pellets will replace coal used by the Hamilton coated paper mill's co-generation plant. The pellets are manufactured from non-recyclable paper and biomass materials that traditionally have gone to landfill. Excess power from the co-gen plant is sold to the U.S. Power Transmission Grid and subsequently distributed across Ohio and the central U.S. via the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (Midwest ISO).
