U.S. P&W Paper Shipments Down Marginally

Total U.S. printing and writing (P&W) paper shipments decreased 1% in December compared with December 2009, according to the American Forest & Paper Association's (AF&PA, Washington, D.C., USA) December 2010 Printing-Writing Paper Report released this week.
Two of the four major P&W paper grades posted increases compared with last December. U.S. purchases (shipments + imports – exports) of P&W papers also decreased, down 1% in December. Total P&W paper inventory levels increased 2% compared with November 2010.
Some additional key findings include:
- Uncoated free sheet (UFS) inventory increased versus last month for the third consecutive month
- Coated free sheet (CFS) shipments increase year-over-year every month in 2010
- Coated mechanical (CM) year-to-date shipments lead 2009 for the twelfth consecutive month
- Uncoated mechanical (UM) shipments increased year-over-year for the eleventh time in 2010.
