U.S. P&W Paper Shipments up 1% from 2010

Total U.S. printing and writing (P&W) paper shipments increased 1% in March compared with March 2010, according to the AF&PA (Washington, D.C., USA) March 2011 Printing-Writing Paper Report, released this past week. Two of the four major P&W grades posted increases compared with last March. U.S. purchases (shipments + imports – exports) of P&W papers decreased 2% in March. Total P&W paper inventory levels decreased 5% compared with February 2011.
Some points of interest from the report include:
- Uncoated free sheet (UFS) shipments increased for the first time this year.
- Year-over-year shipments of coated free sheet (CFS) remained essentially flat in March.
- Coated mechanical (CM) shipments increased year-over-year for the second time this year.
- Uncoated mechanical (UM) year-over-year exports increase for the first time in five months.
