WMU's Principles and Practice of Paper Coating Course Set for June 12 -14

Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich., USA, this past week announced that it will offer its paper coating course June 12-14, featuring classroom instruction and laboratory workshops. The three-day WMU course offers optional (additional fee) hands on laboratory testing experience offered on a fourth day. Altogether, it provides participants access to more than 150 years of experience in product development, operations, and problem solving in the coatings industry.
The course is designed for newcomers to paper and paperboard coating as well as those with experience who want to broaden and update their knowledge and understanding of the basics of coating materials, process technology and coating property, and coated substrate testing.
According to WMU, course participants will learn:
- Why paper and paperboard are coated
- Printing and imaging processes and quality demands on coated paper
- Raw materials used in the preparation of paper coatings
- Principles of coating formulations to meet desired end-use requirements
- Coating application and drying processes and equipment
- Coated paper and paperboard calendering processes and equipment
- An understanding of important paper coating and coated paper test methods
- Coating defect terminology, causes and solutions
- Coating preparation methods.
