DOE Awards Teledyne $2.1 Million for Black Liquor Membrane Project

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reports that Teledyne Scientific & Imaging LLC (TS&I), Thousand Oaks, Calif., in partnership with the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance, Washington, D.C., has been selected to receive one of 13 awards under its Innovative Manufacturing Initiative, which calls for transformational technologies and materials that can dramatically increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. According to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, the 13 competitively selected projects demonstrate DOE's commitment to clean energy technology, and by investing in these technologies, the Department is supporting "an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, and skills for American workers." The three-year, $2.6 million project, including cost share, was selected from a field of about 300 entries.
Teledyne Scientific and its team will develop, optimize, and test a highly durable membrane coating for the black liquor-to-fuel concentration process used by the pulp and paper industry. By eliminating two stages in the conventional five-stage black liquor evaporator process, this technology has the ability to save the paper industry roughly 110 trillion Btus per year. The Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance will provide technical services and industry liaison to the project. Teledyne intends to use the expertise of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology at Georgia Tech as the project proceeds.
