One contract worker died and another was injured early Tuesday, January 22, in an industrial accident at the Resolute Forest Products Catawba, S.C., USA, paper mill. According to a United Steel Workers (USW) report, officials believe the two men were performing maintenance in a decommissioned storage tank at the mill, when an unidentified chemical leaked into the tank.
One of the men, Samir Storey, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene and the second worker was pulled from the tank and treated for injuries. The victims reportedly were not USW members or Resolute Forest Products employees, but contractors with Tradesmen International, a construction labor support company. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has not determined if it will investigate Tuesday's accident.
The Catawba mill produces commercial printing papers and market pulp, with an annual total capacity of 865,000 metric tons. It has some 603 total employees.
