Tamil Nadu to Build New Packaging Board Mill in India

Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd., India, reports that it will construct a Rs.12 billion ($218 million) mill in India to produce 200,000 metric tpy of multi-layer, double-coated packaging board. The new plant will be built in Tiruchi, India, and is expected to provide employment for 2,000 additional people. It will produce high end white liner board for folding boxes, one of the industry's fastest growing segments.
The company is currently producing 400,000 metric tpy of printing and writing papers and recently started up a 600 metric tpd cement plant using paper mill waste and fly ash as raw material.
Tamil Nadu was established by the Government of Tami Nadu in India during the early 1980s to produce newsprint and printing and writing paper using bagasse as the primary raw material. The company commenced production in 1984 with an initial capacity of 90,000 metric tpy. Over the years, the production capacity increased to 245,000 metric tpy and the company has emerged as the largest bagasse based paper mill in the world, consuming about one million metric tons of bagasse every year. In December 2012, Tamil Nadu completed a mill expansion to increase total production capacity to 400,000 metric tpy.
