Stora Enso, Finland, this past week officially inaugurated the new containerboard machine at Ostroleka in Poland. The new, lightweight containerboard machine that went on stream in early 2013, runs on 100% recovered fiber.
"The demand for modern lightweight corrugated packaging is increasing rapidly. The market in Central and Eastern Europe will grow by more than 5% per year," said Mats Nordlander, EVP, Renewable Packaging. "Our new BM 5 will strengthen our position in the growing markets of Central and Eastern Europe, and at the same time support our packaging growth strategy."
Stora Enso's integrated network for collecting paper for recycling in Poland, the new efficient power plant that uses more than 50% biofuels, and the new state-of-the-art containerboard machine with low energy consumption will make Ostroleka the benchmark for cost and product offering in Europe, the company notes.
Stora Enso has established its own collection system in Poland based on collection and sorting stations that it has set up around the country. The packaging material it collects is transported to those collection stations, where it is separated from other waste material and baled. The final raw material is then transported to Stora Enso's mill at Ostroleka and made into new products—corrugated boxes and board packaging.
The Ostrołęka mill is the biggest in Stora Enso Poland. Its history dates back to 1959, the year of inception of the state-owned company Ostrołęckie Zakłady Celulozowe – Papiernicze (the Ostrołęka Pulp and Paper Mill). The first milestone for the company was in 1990 when the Polish-Swedish joint venture partnership under the name of Intercell was established. Intercell has gradually expanded its activities by starting up its mills in Łódź, Tychy, and Mosina. In 2004 all mills of Intercell S.A. joined Stora Enso Poland S.A.
Ostrołęka is the localization of an integrated paper and packaging business that includes a pulp and paper mill, a corrugated board and boxes mill, and a sack mill. The corrugated board and boxes mill produces single and double wall corrugated board of all types of flutes, which are then used for the production of different kinds of American boxes and die-cut boxes.
The sack mill is equipped with three state-of-the art sack production lines. The product range includes open-mouth pasted sacks, open-mouth sewn sacks, and valve pasted sacks.
