U.S. P&W Paper Shipments Fall

Total U.S. printing and writing (P&W) paper shipments were down 7% compared with June 2012, with total inventory levels increasing 4% from May, according to the AF&PA (Washington, D.C., USA) June 2013 Printing-Writing Paper Report issued this past week. Other key findings include:
- June shipments of coated free sheet (CFS) papers decreased 4% compared with June 2012, with year-to-date CFS shipments down less than 1% compared with 2012. U.S. imports of CFS papers increased 7% year-over-year in May.
- Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased 3% year-over-year in June. For the year, shipments are down 4% in 2013. Imports of UFS in May increased 6% compared with May 2012, with exports of UFS up 5%.
- June uncoated mechanical (UM) paper shipments decreased 16% compared with June 2012, with year-over-year imports through May up 1%. UM exports are up 12% in 2013 compared with the first five months of 2012.
- Coated mechanical (CM) shipments in June decreased 16% compared with June 2012. Shipments of CM are down 13% for the year, with imports down 3% year-over-year in May.
