Nippon Performing Testing, Commissioning on New Biomass Boiler at Port Angeles

Nippon Paper Industries' Port Angeles, Wash., USA, mill is performing testing and commissioning activities on its new biomass cogeneration power plant, according to a report this week by Industrial Info Resources (IRR), Sugar Land, Texas. After two years of construction and controversy about burning biomass, the plant should be ready to begin generating power by October.
The Port Angeles mill makes paper for telephone books and other custom paper and newsprint. It reportedly invested some $71 million, and earlier on expected to be reimbursed up to 30% through federal grants.
The new boiler reportedly will make the company more efficient, reduce overall air pollution, and produce 20 MW of energy from forestry biomass that is residue from local timber operations. The new boiler at one time was estimated to cut overall pollutants from the company's papermaking process by 19%.
