Unifor Local 448, Toronto, Ont., Canada, reports that Paper Excellence Canada Holding Corp. (PE) plans to acquire and re-open the Tembec high yield pulp mill in the northern British Columbia town of Chetwynd. The transaction is expected to be completed this spring.

Restart of the mill reportedly will create 110 good jobs in the community. Unifor says it was able to negotiate a new collective agreement with PE that approximates the industry pattern for wages and benefits. "We're proud to have been a part of the negotiations to get people back to work," said Scott Doherty, Unifor western director. "Resource industry jobs are good jobs."

Unifor was founded Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers unions merged. With more than 300,000 members, Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector.

High-yield pulp is used in printing and writing papers, paperboard, and tissue and toweling. Pulp produced at the Chetwynd mill is shipped primarily to Asia. Tembec is the world’s leading producer of high-yield pulp.

The Chetwyn mill, built in 1990, and purchased by Tembec in 2002, was idled permanently in September 2012. It has a production capacity of 240,000 metric tpy of hardwood BCTMP (bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp).
