To remain globally competitive and successful, the Department of Chemical and Paper Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo Mich., USA, reports that it plans to fund an endowed professor who will transform the paper program and ensure its legacy. The overall goal for the initiative is $1.5 million, of which more than $750,000 in commitments has already been secured.
The addition of a new faculty member capable of conducting collaborative research within the industry while teaching relevant current topics will address the critical need of increased enrollment in and funding for the program, WMU notes, adding that the new faculty member will have in-depth knowledge of paper coating, printed electronics, nanomaterials, and biomass processing as well as a strong understanding of new product development. The expanded knowledge base will focus on student research leading to intellectual property and new patents.
