Klabin S.A., Brazil, will utilize France-based Veolia's HPD® black liquor evaporation and process technology for its mill project in Ortigueira, Paraná, Brazil. The new, seven-effect system will have an evaporation capacity of 1,700 metric tons per hour and will include several integrated features to optimize the recovery process. When the project is completed in early 2016, the mill will have an annual pulp production capacity of 1.5 million metric tons
.
The HPD evaporation system is designed to process weak black liquor to 80% total solids and will utilize falling film technology. A switching system used above critical solids will provide for a continuous wash of one of the four first-effect concentrator bodies. The system is designed to minimize total steam and power usage, as well as minimize boil-out requirements while maintaining high, on-stream delivery of 80% liquor to the boiler.
The equipment also includes a foul condensate stripping system, a methanol rectification and handling system, NCG (non-condensable gas) collection, and features a condensate segregation system to allow control of flow, temperature, and quality of water for reuse in the mill. A CRP™ (Chloride Removal Process) system will also be integrated into the process as an effective technology to remove non-process elements from the recovery cycle while recovering sodium to reduce chemical makeup costs.
Confab Equipamentos (Confab), Veolia's partner in Brazil for more than three decades, will perform the majority of the fabrication based on the HPD evaporation and crystallization system design. Confab will also provide engineering, construction and installation, and field services for commissioning of the system.
Klabin was founded in 1899 and operates 16 mills (15 in Brazil and one in Argentina), targeting markets such as packaging paper and board, corrugated packaging, and industrial bag producers. The new pulp project in Brazil is the largest investment in Klabin's history and will double the company's production capacity.
