The Finnish Paper Engineers’ Association (PI) celebrated its 100th anniversary with a Gala on June 4, in association with the PulPaper 2014 event this week in Helsinki, Finland. The Gala was held as a part of PulPaper 2014 and took place in the Helsinki Music Centre.
A multi-audiovisual show took guests on a 100-year journey through PI's history, featuring a special group of actors, singers, and dancers who brought the past 10 decades alive with a series of celebratory renditions. Following the performances and dinner, sister organizations from around the world, including TAPPI, took the stage to congratulate PI.

Also during the Gala, Dr. Markku Karlsson (photo below), senior advisor in the Solutions for Natural Resources and Environment Department at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, was awarded a TAPPI Fellow plaque.
In addition to his distinguished career in the paper industry, Dr. Karlsson has also held a number of professorships in Finland since the 1980s in the fields of mechanical engineering, chemical technology, plant design, energy technology, and paper technology. He currently serves on the TAPPI Board of Directors, from which he will retire this year.
The well-attended 100th Anniversary Gala Evening included members of PI and other paper industry guests from around the world.
