Torraspape, Spain, reports that after negotiations this past week with employee representatives on the viability or closure of its mill in Sarrià de Ter (Girona, Spain), the company reached an agreement to close the facility, relocating 73 of its 132 employees to other group manufacturing sites in Spain. Current production at Sarrià de Ter, approximately 67,000 metric tpy of base paper and uncoated specialty papers, will be relocated to other group mills, primarily to the Zaragoza and Motril mills, resulting in a reduction of coated woodfree paper production capacity at these mills.
The paper industry has been experiencing very difficult conditions, the company noted, with a permanent drop in demand. In addition to the decline in sales, it pointed out, Sarrià de Ter has been affected by the impact of changes in the legislative framework for the electricity industry in recent years.
The gradual closure of Torraspapel’s mill in Sarrià de Ter will take place over the next few months.
