Fusion Paperboard to Close Connecticut Facility

Fusion Paperboard will be closing its Sprague, Conn., USA facility in September and laying off about 145 employees. The company said in a press release on Thursday that it has withstood many changes in the paper industry and has been operating in increasingly difficult market conditions.

"Despite recent efforts, the operation can no longer be sustained," said Joel Laroche, COO of Fusion Paperboard. "We will make every effort to fulfill existing orders and help customers as they transition to alternate suppliers."

Fusion intended to overhaul and repair its paper machine, which produces recycled paper products, and a turbine which generates the power for the paper machine. The state's Department of Economic and Community Development said it would require Fusion to repay its $3 million low-interest state loan with a $150,000 penalty.

Fusion Paperboard produces high-performance coated/recycled boxboard, folding cartons, and packaging for North American food and consumer product manufacturers.
