Paper Industry International Hall of Fame Inducts Six New Members

 

The Paper Industry International Hall of Fame, Appleton, Wis., USA, held its 2014 induction ceremonies this past week. Some 375 people gathered at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel's ballroom to honor six inductees, including the late William Markley Gilbert, co-founder of Menasha's Gilbert Paper Co., and hear keynote speaker Russ Wanke, president and CEO of Expera Specialty Solutions (the recently combined Thilmany Papers and Wausau Paper), who spoke about the industry's need to address the financial burden of some government regulations.

 

The Hall of Fame 2014 inductees are: 

• Arne Asplund (deceased), founder and chairman of Defibrator Group (now Metso) in Stockholm, Sweden
• Hardev S. "Doug" Dugal, who worked in various positions in Appleton's Institute of Paper Chemistry and later co-founded Integrated Paper Services. He was CEO before retiring in 2002.
• Martin Keyes (deceased), founder and president of Keyes Fibre Co. (now Huhtamaki) in Waterville, Maine
• William Markley Gilbert (deceased), co-founder and president of Gilbert Paper Co. in Menasha (under his leadership, the production, sale, and distribution of fine writing papers was revolutionized; the company was the first to successfully use wood and rag fibers to produce fine writing papers)
• Marja-Sisko Ilvessalo-Pfäffli (deceased), research manager for Fiber Physics at KCL and author of "The Fiber Atlas," Helsinki, Finland
• George Tomlinson (deceased), VP of the Howard Smith Paper Co. in Westmount, Que., Canada, inventor of the recovery boiler.
