Finnpulp, Finland, a company founded in 2013 by a group of mostly senior Finnish pulp industry veterans, has announced plans to build a new NBSK (northern bleached softwood kraft) mill in eastern Finland. The planned facility would have a capacity of some 1.1 million metric tpy of softwood pulp, 60,000 metric tpy of tall oil, and 0.8 TWh per year of bio-based electricity for the national grid. This would represent about 1% of Finland's annual electricity consumption, the firm said in a statement.
Finnpulp plans to start an environmental impact assessment, after which the firm can apply for an environmental permit. Any investment decision would be made after this. Finnpulp is negotiating the financing with Finnish and international investors.
The company noted that growth of the softwood pulp market is based on a continued global increase in demand for tissue and packaging materials, and the firm said that the Finnish forests offer an excellent raw material base for the industry's giant investments.
