Resolute Forest Products, Ont., Canada, (formerly Bowater) has broken ground on a $105 million upgrade to its pulp and paper mill in Calhoun, Tenn., an upgrade the company says will mean more than 50 new jobs. The project includes installation of a modern continuous pulp digester and other wood chip processing equipment. The company says when completed in the fourth quarter of 2015, the project will contribute to significantly lowering the mill’s costs, by increasing pulp capacity and providing additional flexibility that will allow it to produce a range of products.
"We are proud to celebrate this milestone that will make the Calhoun mill a leader in today’s competitive paper market and poised to capitalize on future opportunities," said Richard Garneau, president and CEO of Resolute. "When the project is complete, the mill will produce specialty printing papers in addition to value-added grades not produced before at the mill. This project is the result of the hard work of many partners, including our employees, McMinn County, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the State of Tennessee, who all stepped up to the task when we asked for their support."
