According to a report this past week by the Ottawa Citizen, production has been suspended indefinitely at Kruger Inc.’s Gatineau mill following an intense fire early Saturday.

Firefighters arriving at the scene on Laurier Avenue in Vieux-Hull shortly after 1:00 a.m. on January 9 were met with intense flames and smoke in the mill.

The fire is believed to have begun in the plant’s electrical system and the Gatineau fire service reported the flames heavily damaged transformers powering one of the large paper machines.

Firefighters and Kruger staff managed to bring the intense fire under control shortly after 2:00 a.m. Some 25 workers were cleared from the building and damages were estimated at $125,000.

There were no injuries.

The company was unable to say how long production will be affected.
