According to a recent report by Euwid Pulp and Paper, Germany, corrugated board and packaging production at SP Cartonpack Hellas in Corinth, Greece, a DS Smith (U.K.) group company, was idled Monday due to a fire. For some unknown reason, the fire broke out on Monday morning in the raw materials storage area, but it could not be prevented from spreading to other parts of the facility, a spokesperson for DS Smith explained Tuesday. The corrugator was not damaged by the blaze and there were no casualties reported, the spokesperson added.

Together with other two corrugated companies, SP Cartonpack Hellas was acquired by DS Smith last October from Turkey's Cukurova group. The total capacity of the three facilities in Corinth, Lerapetra, and Thessaloniki is said to be 200 million mē.

There is no information so far when the company might restore operations at the fire-hit site in Corinth. According to DS Smith, the production shortfall will be offset by other group companies in Greece.
