TAPPI Industry Career Center: GL&V Seeks Engineering Project Manager

The Pulp and Paper Group designs and globally markets equipment used in various stages of paper production, from pulp preparation to sheet formation and finishing. It also serves the global market with rebuilding, upgrading and optimization services for existing equipment, as well as the sale of spare parts. It ensures that its portfolio contains innovative products and technologies that bring customers added value, such as lower energy consumption.
 
The Project Manager is responsible for assuring that the Company meets obligations to the buyer, on assigned jobs, within the pre-defined scope, schedule, and budget while managing any risks to the company of warranty costs or performance damages.
 
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Assures scope of supply is clearly and accurately defined (including exceptions).
  • Serves as main contact with customer for all issues relating to the order including schedules, payments, change orders, information requests, etc.
  • Review & approve all purchase requisitions (price & terms) for major purchases.
  • Monitor actual costs versus planned costs and report variances project summary and project economy reports.
  • Approve any changes within scope of authority (chargeable or no charge), inform customer of price and schedule impact, and receive written confirmation from the customer prior to initiating the change. Formal change orders must be issued for work to be initiated.
  • Serves as main internal project coordinator with the various departments and GL&V divisions involved in the project realization, coordinating project activities such as: project approval, kick-off, financial review and forecasting, assembly requirements, installation/commissioning requirements (installation readiness), start up, attainment of performance guarantee objectives, warranty claims, etc. 
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from four-year college or university; with a minimum of 5 years related experience in Project Management, 10 years of experience in Project Management preferred; or 10 years related experience and/or training in related customer engineered industrial equipment design and/or business experience preferably in the Pulp & Paper industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to function and thrive within a team environment.
  • Must work well with all departments across the operating platform and must be able to work well with and maintain positive relationships with our sales team, customers, suppliers, and business partners.
  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with custom engineered machinery and controls.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or 3D modeling software applications a plus.
  • Approximately 25-50% travel will be required. Destinations will be within the United States as well as international locations.
  • Willingness to work hours that may vary significantly depending on the projects and tasks assigned.
