After being shutdown and mothballed for more than a year, the former Manistique Papers mill in Manistique, Mich., USA, will be brought back to life this June as UP Paper LLC, reportedly producing unbleached kraft papers from recycled fiber.
Several newspaper reports say the mill, which was bought by local businessman Stan Zellar, will require various repair work before it can begin production on June 13. Some 90 employees will staff the restarted mill, down from 150 workers at the old Manistique Papers mill. Zellar says he hopes the smaller staff and more focused paper production will help the mill stay afloat.
The mill hosted a public Open House tour this past Saturday, May 14, 2016.
