Brodskaya’s work joins other amazing paper-based artists that have been featured by OTW during the past few months that might be an inspiration to commercial paper producers, such as the Paperboard Steampunk Sculptures that Show a Complex Imaginary World and the Artist Who Creates Compelling Animated Stories with Paper Cups.
Brodskaya first discovered the technique (explained in this YouTube video) when looking for an interesting and eye-catching way to spell out her name. Eventually she discovered the medium was great for creating textured pieces of detailed artwork. Some of her more popular works feature depictions of the elderly in bright and beautiful ways. Instead of having to use drawn lines for the impression of wrinkles on skin or other surfaces, Brodskaya is able to use pre-colored strips of paper attached vertically onto a "canvas" piece of paper to create both the image she wants as well as the texture she wants without having to darken the image with graphite shade, darker paint lines, or ink. The result is a fully-developed, detail oriented style that many viewers have commented is both visually pleasing and interesting to look at. Many even want to feel her work by touching with their fingers (if they could be there in person).
If you work for a company that might be interested in incorporating this type of design into commercially produced paper presentations or specialty packaging, you can try contacting Yulia directly through her website for more information about how to make this possibility a reality.
