Instructors:
Dr. Richard Phillips is adjunct professor and executive in residence in the Department of Wood and Paper Science (Paper Science and Engineering) at North Carolina State University, having retired as SVP-technology and manufacturing from International Paper. In this position, Dr. Phillips was responsible for providing manufacturing and engineering services, as well as oversight of corporate research and development for International Paper Co. Dr. Phillips was responsible for the establishment of an integrated pulp and paper mill facility in Brazil and was a board member of the joint venture between IP and Ilim in Russia. Currently, Dr. Phillips teaches Strategic Business Practices in the Pulp and Paper Industry at NCSU and provides leadership and critical thinking across the department. Dr. Phillips earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University. He is a recognized expert in strategic and investment analysis in the pulp and paper industry.
Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez is chair of the Conversion Economics and Sustainability Group. He is Faculty of Conversion Economics, Finance, and Supply Chain in the Paper Science & Engineering and Sustainable Materials & Technology Programs at NC State University. Prior to joining NC State, Dr. Gonzalez was corporate controller of manufacturing and logistics for North, Central, and South America for Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (the biggest global tissue producer). He also held several positions in controlling and manufacturing at Smurfit Kappa Carton de Venezuela (an integrated forestry, pulp and paper, and packaging solutions company). In his last positions, he was co-responsible for daily business operations for several divisions in different countries (including budget preparation and control, financial reporting, capital investment analysis, cost control, strategic analysis). Other experience includes the establishment of processing facilities and supply chain analysis for several customers, product development, and market research. Dr. Gonzalez has provided consultancy services to startup and established companies in the U.S., Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia.
Dr. Stephen K. Markham received his Ph.D. from Purdue University, MBA from the University of California, Irvine, and an M.S. and B.S. in social psychology from Brigham Young University. He is a certified new product development professional and is an associate professor of management, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the College of Management at North Carolina State University and is president of the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA) Research Foundation, founder of the PDMA New Product Development Professional Certification Program, past PDMA officer and board member, and past director of the Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Commercialization Program (TEC), and past director of the Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS). His research focuses on the roles and processes in the front end of technological innovation, concentrating on the role champions take in early commercial development of technology. He is on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Product Innovation Management and reviews regularly for journals such as Organization Science, IEEE Transaction on Engineering Management, as well as for the National Science Foundation. Dr. Markham actively teaches in the executive education and MBA programs in the areas of leadership, corporate culture, innovation,and technology commercialization. He has received and participated in 11 Grants totaling nearly $2.5 million.He has been a founding board member or officer of numerous high-technology start-up companies and consults with numerous global technology-based companies.
Dr. Hasan Jameel is the Ellis Signe Olssen Named Professor at North Carolina State University. Dr. Jameel’s professional specialties include pulping and bleaching, process optimization and simulation, bio-energy, and gasification. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1975, and his Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from Princeton in 1980. In 1979, he joined International Paper, where he stayed until becoming a professor at NCSU in 1987. Dr. Jameel has received numerous honors and awards for his work, including the Johan C.F.C. Richter Prize from the TAPPI Pulp Manufacture Division. Other TAPPI honors include the David Wetherhorn Award (1994), TAPPI Outstanding Instructor (1995), and the Wayne Carr Best Paper Award (2002). He has been a TAPPI member since 1987 and has been involved with several divisions and local sections. Dr. Jameel is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science, TAPPI, and a member of AIChE. He holds three patents and has authored two books and more than 100 conference papers.
