U.S., P&W Paper Shipments Decline in July

Total U.S. printing and writing (P&W) paper shipments decreased 8% in July, compared with July 2015, according to the AF&PA (Washington, D.C., USA) July 2016 Printing-Writing Paper Report released this week. Total P&W paper inventory increased 4% from June levels. Key data for the report include: 
  • Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased 8% compared with July 2015. UFS imports were down 37% year-over-year in June with exports down 22%.
  • June coated free sheet (CFS) paper shipments increased 1% compared with July 2015. Imports of CFS papers decreased 11% in June, with exports increasing 9% year-over-year.
  • Uncoated mechanical (UM) paper shipments decreased 19% in July compared with July 2015, the sixth year-over-year decrease in 2016. Imports of UM papers were down 26% in June, while exports of UM in June increased 5% compared with the previous year.
  • Coated mechanical (CM) shipments in July decreased 14% when compared with July 2015. Imports of CM increased 9% in June compared with June 2015, with exports down 11%.
