ExxonMobil Launches Mobil DTE PM Excel for Paper Machines

ExxonMobil, Irving, Texas, USA, has launched the Mobil DTE PM Excel multi-purpose paper oil designed to help paper manufacturers reduce costs and increase productivity. The advanced lubricant is designed to provide effective lubrication for wet end, dry end, and press sections.

Analysts say paper machines can be running three times or five times faster than what they were originally designed for, resulting in harder stress on the oil. Higher steam temperatures means higher temperatures of the rolling element, and of the gears, which leads to higher stress on the oil.

Customers tend to squeeze out the last bits of their machinery, and it eventually gets towards the next bottle neck in their production. Oil can be one of those bottle necks as oil is a transporter of all of the issues/problems in the whole system—a true indicator of needing a step change.

Mobil DTE PM Excel is suitable for a multitude of paper machine applications which require a high performance gear or circulating oil. The oil has been engineered to help extend maintenance intervals by protecting against gear scuffing and bearing wear, including bearings in the dryer section, which operate in extremely high temperatures.

This extension of maintenance intervals can help increase productivity and reduce potentially hazardous interactions with equipment, enhancing worker safety. The oil can also be used throughout the process, simplifying maintenance operations and decreasing the risk of human error.

"Operating machinery in the paper industry is a very complex process. The extremely high temperatures together with process water mean there is a great need for lubricants that can operate effectively in this environment," said Jarmo Vihersalo, industrial marketing advisor EAME, ExxonMobil. "Mobil DTE PM Excel can be used at all stages of the production process. Not only does this help to increase productivity, but it also helps to extends maintenance intervals, which can enhance employee safety and reduce waste oil."

"That's why we developed this product—for upgrading our current DTE PM users towards this grade," said Bert-Jan Hermsen, sector specialist process industry, ExxonMobil, told Packaging News. He said the new oil will significantly extend the lifetime of the oil.

"We increased the base oil quality so you typically get a better thermal resistance and more stability, and also updated the additive pack towards the current state of technology. We are very confident about this new oil. It is the next step in product technology," Hermsen emphasized. "The current Mobil DTE PM is the work horse of the paper industry. I am pretty confident the new product will eventually take over that role."
