PaperWorks Industries Inc., Bala Cynwyd, Pa., USA, will permanently close one of the oldest paper mills in the U.S.—the PaperWorks Philadelphia Mill on Flat Rock Road in Manayunk, Pa. The closure, reportedly set for April 14, 2017, will involve a layoff of some 147 employees.

The PaperWorks Philadelphia Mill represents more than 200 years of papermaking history. According to PaperWorks, it was the world’s largest papermaking plant in the 1860s, and its paper machine is said to still be the widest in the world.

Founded in 2008, PaperWorks Industries currently produces 400,000 tons of 100% recycled paperboard, employing 2,000 people at its nine facilities in the U.S. and Canada.
