Smurfit Kappa Appoints Mayer CEO Europe

Saverio Mayer has been appointed CEO of Smurfit Kappa Europe. He succeeds Roberto Villaquiran who steps down from this position to pursue another opportunity.
Tony Smurfit, Group CEO, said that "we are delighted to announce the appointment of Saverio Mayer as CEO Europe. Saverio has been with the group for more than 30 years and was most recently the COO of our European Corrugated and Converting operations. He has played a key role in the growth and development of our European business and will bring great energy and experience to the role.
"Roberto leaves Smurfit Kappa to pursue another opportunity outside of the paper-based packaging sector. He has helped the group build and sustain its leading position in Europe and we thank him for his significant contribution to the group in his various leadership roles. We wish him well for the future," Smurfit added.
Since joining the company in 1986, Mayer has held a number of commercial and operational roles. In 1996 he became head of pan European sales before taking up the position of CEO of Italy in 2001. In conjunction with his role in Italy, Mayer has also been CEO of SK Russia from 2007-2009, CEO of SK Poland from 2007-2011, and since 2011 was responsible for the company’s Bag-in-Box (BIB) Division. In September 2015, he was appointed COO of Corrugated and Converting Europe and was responsible for the operational, sales, and financial performance of the corrugated plants and BIB.
