Klabin Celebrates 118th Year

Klabin, São Paulo, Brazil, turned 118 years of age this month (April 19, 2017). Today the biggest producer and exporter of paper in Brazil and a leader in the production of paper and paperboards for packaging, corrugated paperboard packaging, and industrial bags, Klabin is the only company in the country that produces hardwood pulp, softwood pulp, and fluff pulp in the same industrial unit. With 17 mills in Brazil and one in Argentina, the company has more than 18,000 (direct and indirect) employees and is a reference in sustainability practices.
On this 118th anniversary, Klabin reaffirmed its commitment to look after its forests, its people, and the communities surrounding its operations. A pioneer in adopting forestry mosaic management (a system that intersperses preserved native forest with planted forest), the company was the first in the paper and pulp sector of the Southern Hemisphere to be accredited by an international organization for sustainable and economically-feasible forestry management. Klabin preserves more than 40% of its total forest area and maintains two Natural Heritage Private Reserves (RPPNs) in the States of Paraná and Santa Catarina solely intended for scientific studies and environmental and water protection.
With the capacity to produce 2 million metric tpy of paper and 1.5 million metric tpy of pulp, the company takes advantage of its product line competitiveness, quality, and flexibility and by its unparalleled mix in the Brazilian industry. Last year, Klabin inaugurated the greater investment of its history, the Puma Unit, one of the world’s most modern pulp mills. Planned in compliance with the best global sustainability practices, the unit allowed the company to become self-sufficient for generating electric power from renewable sources.
Klabin is organized into four business units: Forestry, Pulp (hardwood, softwood, and fluff pulp), Paper (paperboard, kraft paper and recycled), and Packaging (corrugated board and industrial bags).
The company’s management is entirely oriented towards Sustainable Development in the pursuit of integrated and responsible growth that combines profitability, social development, and commitment to the environment. Klabin has been included in the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) of the São Paulo Stock Exchange (BM&FBovespa) since 2014. It is also a signatory to the U.N. Global Compact and the Brazilian Pact to Eradicate Slave Labor, and seeks suppliers and business partners that adopt the same values of ethics, transparency, and respect for the principles of sustainability.
