Unifor Mourns Member Killed on the Job

Unifor, Kamlops, B.C., Canada, this week is mourning the loss of member, colleague, and friend James G. Macleod (Jim), who succumbed to injuries following an incident involving a crane at the Domtar Mill in Kamloops on June 29, 2017. 

"Nobody should lose their life while trying to earn a living," said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. "On behalf of all Unifor members, I want to extend our deepest sympathy to Jim's family, loved ones, and work colleagues." 

Macleod was 57 years old with 37 years of service in the Kamloops mill. He was an active member of Unifor Local 10-B, serving as a member of the executive, a Local representative on union committees and as a convention delegate. Macleod was a dedicated leader who faithfully represented his fellow members in the best possible manner. 

On July 4, 2017, a flag lowering ceremony was held in Macleod's honor where his family, union members, staff, retirees, and Domtar officials gathered together in grief. Thoughts and best wishes were also extended to Local 10-B member Ross Thompson who was injured in the crane incident and is now healing at home with his family. 

"Unifor will support the investigation into how this tragedy occurred with every means at its disposal," said Unifor Western Regional Director Joie Warnock. "Safe work rules must be rigorously implemented and enforced to prevent the worst from happening." 

Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers in every sector of the economy. It was formed Labor Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers unions merged.
