SCA, Sundsvall, Sweden, is investing SEK 196 million in increased production of white-top kraftliner, packaging paper with a white surface, in the Munksund papermill in Piteå, Sweden. Through this investment, the mill’s capacity to produce white kraftliner will increase from 150,000 tons to 200,000 metric tpy. Total production capacity will not increase as a result of the investment.

The investment will affect the wood room, where the pulpwood is debarked, and the pulp mill. The project will be finished and in operation in May 2019.

"This is an important step in our development towards more value-added products at Munksund paper mill," said Mats Nordlander, president of SCA Business Area Paper. "The demand is increasing for white kraftliner with excellent printing properties. Through this investment, we increase the production of high-value products in Munksund and we can optimize the production of kraftliner in the Obbola papermill. Thereby we improve the competitiveness of both mills."

The wood room in Munksund is today debarking softwood and hardwood pulpwood in batches. Through the investment the flow of softwood is separated from the flow of hardwood and debarking can be carried out with higher quality and less noise.

The mill's capacity to produce hardwood pulp will be increased through a number of measures. The mill's use of softwood will be reduced, while the use of hardwood will increase.

The investment does not affect the number of employees.

The core of SCA's business is the forest—2.6 million hectares in northern Sweden. Around this unique resource, the company has built a well-developed value chain based on renewable raw material from its own and others' forests. SCA offers paper for packaging and print, pulp, wood products, renewable energy, services for forest owners, and efficient transport solutions. In 2016, the forest products company SCA had approximately 4,000 employees and sales amounted to approximately SEK 15.4 billion (EUR 1.6 billion). SCA was founded in 1929 and has its headquarters in Sundsvall, Sweden.
