The Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology and TAPPI have partnered together to bring you two exciting courses to further your papermaking knowledge this year:
Advanced Hands-On Papermaking: Formation, May 3-4, 2018
Advanced Hands-On Papermaking: Additives May 31-June 1, 2018
Both will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and feature classroom sessions and hands-on training using the university’s Fourdrinier Pilot Paper Machine.
Led by Dr. Gerry Ring, Professor Emeritus of Paper Science and Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, attendees will gain fundamental knowledge of the commercial papermaking process.
Advanced Hands-On Papermaking: Formation will cover:
- the relationship between sheet structure and paper qualities
- why paper making fibers floc
- manufacturing techniques that minimize fiber floccing
- the relationship between sheet structure, formation, and paper properties
- both visual and instrumental measurement of formation
- the difficulties associated with the correlation of visual formation assessment and the instrument measurement.
Advanced Hands-On Papermaking: Additives will cover:
- the difference between acid and alkaline papermaking
- the difference between process additives and product improving additives
- the basics of retention aid functionality
- the difference between wet and dry strength additives
- foam control, pitch control and biocides
- the purpose and use of fillers.
