Exploring the Sustainable Alternative for Jet Fuel Production in Kraft Pulp Mill Infrastructures

TAPPI’s International Bioenergy & Bioproducts Conference (IBBC) annually brings focus on leading technologies that use renewable materials from biomass to produce chemicals and fuel to help sustain the bioeconomy.

This year, during Session 3: Biorefinery Infrastructure, attendees will take a deep dive into an investigative study that compared strategies for the integration of Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) conversion with kraft pulp mill infrastructures. Alcohol-to-Jet is a pathway for production of aviation fuel through the catalytic conversion of alcohol to synthetic paraffinic kerosene, which is a sustainable alternative jet fuel (SAJF).

In the study, process integration engineering was used to identify key barriers, opportunities, and research areas. Integration cases included the use of pretreatment and hydrolysis of cellulose in pulp intermediates as well as hemicellulose utilization through pre-extraction or black liquor fractionation. The effects of these changes on the mass and energy balances of the plant were considered, along with capital cost estimations of new process units. The session will be presented by Scott Geleynse from Washington State University.

A second session in the Biorefinery track, Failure Analysis of Wood Gasifier Vessels, will be presented by James Keiser of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In this session, attendees will learn how gasification of biomass, or biomass-containing steams, offers a means to produce syngas which can be combusted directly or converted to higher value products.
