U.S. P&W Paper Exports Down Sharply, Imports Slightly Up

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) headquartered in Washington, D.C., USA, released its August 2018 Printing-Writing Monthly Report on Friday, September 14.
According to the August 2018 Printing-Writing Monthly Report from the AF&PA, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 11% in August compared to August 2017. Total P&W paper inventory levels decreased 3% from July. Imports of P&W papers in July increased 6% compared to July 2017 imports, while exports declined 24% compared to July 2017.
- Shipments of coated mechanical (CM) paper decreased 11% year-over-year in August. Inventory levels decreased 6%. Exports of CM papers increased 5% in July compared to July 2017.
- Shipments of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers decreased 21% year-over-year in August. Imports of UM decreased 2% year-over-year in July. Exports of UM decreased 70% year-over-year in July.
- Shipments of uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper and coated free sheet (CFS) papers both decreased year-over-year in August. July imports of UFS papers increased 37% compared to July 2017, while imports of CFS papers increased 2% compared to last July.
