Pulp Digester Optimization and Biorefinery Technologies Addressed at PEERS and IBBC 2019

Today’s pulp and paper mills operate under constant pressure to reduce production costs and increase yields. The kraft pulp digester operation plays a critical role in the whole pulp mill economy and consistent pulp quality has a direct impact on bottom line profits. To maintain quality targets, digester optimization has become increasingly important.
Recently, Valmet Inc. and Graphic Packaging International successfully collaborated on a continuous digester optimization project with the goal to reduce kappa variation, ease up operation and increase the yield and paper mill runnability. Kari Lampela of Valmet discusses the results of the project at PEERS 2019. Her presentation, "GPI West Monroe Digester Optimization Project," is part of the Pulping and Bleaching track.
TAPPI’s Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference, October 27-30, 2019 in St. Louis, MO, focuses on the latest advances in technology, as well as fundamental process knowledge and control issues mills face each day. Co-located with PEERS, TAPPI’s International Bioenergy & Bioproducts Conference (IBBC) focuses on the latest technologies and processes that use renewable materials from biomass to produce chemicals, fuels, and other value-added products. It offers attendees a peer-reviewed technical program addressing key topics relating to biorefinery technologies, bioproduct innovations, and nonwoods. The Biorefinery Technology session includes expert-led presentations on: Pelleting Characteristics of Blends of Pine Residue and Switchgrass; Valorization of Willow Lignin Based on Hot Water Extraction; and Organosolv Fractionation and Flexible Biorefinery.
PEERS and IBBC 2019 are also co-located with TAPPI's 12th Research Forum on Recycling which is held once every three years. The Forum addresses the latest in recycling research, technical updates and operating issues on key topics including: recycling, contaminant removal, and recover paper.
