Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) is the United States’ first regulatory program focused specifically on security at high-risk chemical facilities. Managed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the program works with facilities to ensure they have security measures in place to reduce the risks associated with certain hazardous chemicals, and prevent them from being exploited in a terrorist attack.

Attendees at Specialty Papers US 2019, Sep. 30 – Oct. 2 in Milwaukee, WI, will have the unique opportunity to learn more about CFATS during Scott Gearen’s, Chemical Security Inspector at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, presentation, “Protecting Pulp and Paper Production Facilities with Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS).”

Gearen will discuss the CFATS program and how the standards it sets in place apply to pulp and paper facilities. Pulp, paper, and paper conversion facilities use a wide variety of chemicals, many of which are regulated by CFATS for various security issues. If held in specified quantities and concentrations, these chemicals trigger reporting requirements under CFATS. The program currently regulates approximately 3,000 high-risk facilities.

Specialty Papers US is considered the premier event in North America dedicated to the specialty papers industry. This year, leaders from across the supply chain will gather to discuss the sustainable future of specialty papers. The program offers sessions focused on market trends, emerging applications and developments, new innovations, advancements in specialty paper coatings and barriers, sustainable end-of-life solutions, process solutions, and chemical security. It also includes a pre-conference workshop that provides an overview of the specialty paper sector for those new to the industry, and a panel discussion focused on sustainable packaging dynamics with panelists from The Dow Chemical Company, Compost Manufacturing Alliance, LLC, Waste Management, Michelman, SYNAPIC Packaging, and Sustana.

The Conference is organized by TAPPI and Smithers Pira. Attendees can receive a 15% discount off their registration by entering codes: TAPPISPUS19. Register here.
