IPH 35th Biennial Congress conference announced for 2020

Titled Investigating American Collections on Paper, the meeting will emphasize presentations related to paper used or imported into the Americas. Presentations will cover such topics as: the history and economics of the paper industry; the international paper trade; technical studies on papers used by artists, printers, and literary figures; techniques for identifying and recording watermarks in paper; and the assembly and management of databases of watermark images.

The conference organizers are eager to solicit presentations for sessions that could address, for example:

  • Papermaking in North America from the Revolutionary Period to the present
  • Technical Studies of paper used in cultural artifacts, from broadsides to musical scores
  • Artists’ and Fine Printers’ papers from around the World
  • The Paper Trade in the Americas: imported and exported papers -New Technologies in Paper Studies: watermark imaging and databases

In addition to talks, the program will include tours of special collections at the hosting institutions, including manuscripts, maps, music collections, works of art and rare books. Paper sample collections at the National Gallery and Library of Congress will be featured.

Arrangements for optional pre- or post-conference papermaking or papermill tours are underway.
