The Alliance for Pulp & Paper Technology Innovation (APPTI) has selected an international team led by Miami University to carry out a project, under the direction of Dr. Douglas Coffin, titled Development of a Corrugated Box Model for Time-dependent Load Scenarios. In addition to Miami University, the team includes RISE Research Institutes Of Sweden, Scion and Massey University (New Zealand). The combined experience and expertise of the four international teams of investigators working in close collaboration will result in the development of models and methods for predicting containerboard performance.
In this project, finite element analysis (FEA) strategies and models will be developed that enable simulation of rate-dependent loading of packages. Independent input properties of corrugated board will be measured and boxes tested to verify and validate these models. The results of this project will create the foundation and roadmap to successful advanced engineering design of corrugated packaging.
The Alliance for Pulp & Paper Technology Innovation (APPTI), a non-profit organization, exists to identify high priority, pre-competitive technology challenges for the pulp and paper industry and to promote research and development projects to address them. The APPTI Packaging Testing team is focused on the development of more accurate physical test methods and models to enable reduction in manufacturing costs, limit customer product loss, and facilitate the development of higher performing containerboard and converted packaging. www.appti.org
