International Paper Announces Progress on Its 2020 Sustainability Goals

International Paper (NYSE: IP) has released its 2019 Global Citizenship Report. The company, one of the leading producers of renewable, fiber-based packaging, pulp and paper, shares the progress it made in 2019 against its 2020 goals and outlines its approach to sustainability across its value chain.

Some notable 2019 achievements include:

  • GHG Emissions: 22% reduction in GHG emissions (scope 1 & 2) since 2010
  • Fiber Certification: 47% increase in certified fiber volume since 2010
  • Recycling: 63% increase in recovery of old corrugated containers (OCC) since 2010
  • Water Quality: 28% decrease in oxygen-depleting substances in its mill water discharges since 2010
  • Community Engagement: $24 million donated to charitable organizations in 2019, with a cumulative impact of $134 million since 2010

The report also introduces the company’s Vision 2030 goals, which reflect its commitment to build a better future for people, the planet and the company. 

“2019 was a pivotal year for us, as we finalized our next generation of goals and focused our attention on outlining a sustainable path to 2030,” said International Paper Chairman and CEO, Mark Sutton, in the report. “It was important to us that our goals were focused, ambitious and moved the needle on both environmental and social challenges. We aimed for goals that establish us as an industry leader in sustainability and push us to drive significant progress in the circular economy.”

The International Paper 2019 Global Citizenship Report was prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards: Core option.
