Wheat straw as an alternative pulp fiber” was TAPPI Journal’s (TJ) most downloaded article in 2020.

In the article, author Peter Hart discusses how fiber from wheat straw was evaluated as a potential partial replacement for hardwood kraft fiber in a routine sustainability and new product effort.

According to the article’s abstract, the desire to market sustainable packaging materials has led to an interest in the use of various fiber types as a raw material. It has been suggested that the use of annual crops for partial replacement of wood fiber would result in more sustainable products. Several life cycle analyses (LCA) have been performed to evaluate these claims. These LCAs provided conflicting and contradictory results because of the local conditions and the specific pulping processes investigated. In the article, selected LCAs are reviewed and the underlying reasons for these conflicting results are analyzed.

Published in the journal’s January 2020 edition, the article is now available as a free download along with the other articles in the issue.

TJ’s hybrid-Open Access (OA) publishing model provides TAPPI members’ exclusive first access to the latest year’s research online at no charge, while non-members pay a fee for current articles. At the one-year anniversary of an article’s publication, nonmembers gain access to the research at no charge. This OA model was adopted a year ago to improve the accessibility and visibility to the research and increase researcher engagement.

You are invited to submit your research to TJ to reach a global audience of colleagues, peers and employers. If your work is published in TJ, the copyright remains with you, and unlike other technical journals, TJ does not require a publication fee.

As an added bonus, your paper could be named the TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper of the Year AND the $2,000 Honghi Tran TAPPI Journal Best Paper Prize which will be presented annually at TAPPICon.
