With COVID-19 continuing to have disruptive effects on production and revenues, there's never been a more important time to stay ahead of the curve. Specialty Papers Europe 2021, taking place online on 28-29 September 2021 will cover all these important topics and more.

To give you a sneak peek of what to expect from our conference, we wanted to give you a short industry update…

The past 18 months have been highly disruptive for the paper industry, supply chains have come under severe strain, and demand for many publication grades has collapsed. As the industry still anticipates a return of equilibrium to raw material and end-use markets, one sector that has shown impressive growth in e-commerce packaging.

The latest research from Smithers forecasts [https://www.smithers.com/en-gb/services/market-reports/packaging/the-future-of-e-commerce-packaging-to-2025] that this is not a short-term peak, but indicative of a deeper shift in consumer demand, which will continue to benefit the paper industry over the next five years.

The total value of corrugated packaging used in direct-to-consumer e-commerce shipments reached 21.05 million tonnes in 2020, worth $39.10 billion. This compares to $26.98 billion in 2019, and $31.97 billion in 2020 projections without the impact of the Covid pandemic. Further growth will push this segment to a total value of $77.27 billion in 2025.

The market is already starting to diversify, beyond standard corrugated grades. For premium products, brands are demanding superior white surfaces to carry higher quality graphics both inside and outside the delivery container.
