SCA said that it will invest SEK 90 million (approx. US$9.6 million) in its Östrand pulp mill in Timrå, Sweden. The investment includes a new incinerator that will lead to operational cost savings while allowing the pulp mill to increase production capacity.
Importantly, the investment will improve the local environment by reducing the risk of odor disruptions.
SCA explained that with the new incinerator, Östrand's pulp mill will burn strong gases and the surplus of methanol. The incinerator is in principle independent of the fact that other processes are in operation, which is why the gases can be burned in a stable way even in the event of operational disruptions.
Another major advantage of the incinerator is that it can convert the surplus of certain chemicals in the mill into another type of chemical that the mill currently procures for the production of CTMP pulp.
Currently, the Östrand pulp mill has the capacity to produce 900,000 metric tons per year of Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp (NBSK). In addition, the mill has the capacity to produce 100,000 tpy of Chemi-Thermo Mechanical Pulp (CTMP).
SCA said the purchasing process has begun and will be completed during the winter, and expects the new incinerator to be commissioned no later than the second quarter of 2023.
