You’ll get a rare view of the intersection between business and environmental stewardship and will be responsible for understanding and alerting others to market issues and developments.
As Manager of Industry Affairs for American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), you will also play an important role in organization and industry outreach. This includes helping to expand and retain our membership of Fortune 500 companies, industry partners, and associations, as well as playing a lead role in growing future sustainable packaging leaders through a nationwide student design challenge.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Develop subject matter expertise (data & information) that can support advocacy
- Stay current on issues and developments in the paperboard, printing and writing, pulp and tissue marketplace and understand how they relate to legislative and regulatory action; share updates with others to develop messaging and position statements
- Interact with senior level member company executives of the paperboard, printing and writing, pulp and tissue sectors as needed to gather information
- Identify issues and assist the Executive Director, Printing and Writing, Pulp and Tissue in determining desired outcomes to advance the Sectors’ objectives
- Assist with research projects on certain printing and writing, pulp and tissue sector initiatives. This includes:
- Collecting and organizing information from appropriate sources of information, including statistical reports developed by AF&PA, FTC reports, or other sustainability reports
- Assist with analysis of data/information, identifying next steps and communicating results to staff and members
- As needed, represent AF&PA in meetings to outside audiences, organizations and strategic alliances at meetings
- As needed, serve as a back-up for meeting preparation and administrative functions for Industry Affairs
- Prepare materials for VP/Sector Execs & CEO member meetings and visits
- Develop member correspondence, marketing materials, company profiles, board materials, updates, articles and monthly dashboard

Skills and Knowledge Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills in writing, editing and public presentation
- Strong organizational and project management skills to effectively balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong critical thinking, analytical and research skills
- Ability to produce high quality work within tight deadlines
- Ability to develop, analyze and evaluate statistical data
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion with initiative and limited supervision
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, and exercise discretion in sensitive AF&PA matters and on policy and market issues
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain positive rapport with others
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to occasionally travel to different locations in the US preferred
- Ability to occasionally work outside of regular business hours/days
- Interest in business, marketing, sustainability, and/or manufacturing
Education/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of study
- Five or more years of professional work experience, including some level of experience in one of the following areas: sustainability, membership, meeting planning, marketing, administration, industry analysis, or similar function
- Experience working in an association preferred
