The Glass Mat Engineer provides leadership and key support to the CertainTeed Glass Mat plants for the analysis, control, standardization and improvements of the overall processes in order to meet or exceed the CertainTeed Manufacturing goals: Safety – Quality – Delivery – Cost – Sustainability.
The Glass Mat Engineer will utilize WCM (World Class Manufacturing), TIP (Technology & Industrial Performance) and PMP (Project Management) tools for the implementation of all kind of projects, focused but not limited to product formulation, process development and optimization, zero defects, new equipment design and implementation, equipment improvement, raw materials trials, process trials, cost reduction, sustainability, and general project engineering, that will support the achievement of the Glass Mat business objectives.
The Glass Mat Engineer provides guidance and direction about new technologies and raw materials for Glass Mat manufacturing, including Industry 4.0, Automation and Digital tools, aiming for a State of the Art facilities. The Glass Mat Engineer reports to the Glass Mat General Manager.
This position can be remote or based out of our Corporate HQ in Malvern, PA or a Glass Mat site in Russellville, AL, Oxford, NC or Charleston, SC.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- In collaboration with the glass mat plants teams, analyzes process and performance variations, quality issues and customer complaints, identifying root causes, supporting the developing of solutions and following up the implementation of corrective actions.
- Develops and obtain approval for strategic Capital plans and LRP for the Glass Mat plants.
- In close collaboration with the plants, leads major Capital projects for process improvements and new equipment.
- Conduct benchmarking for the glass mat plants finding opportunities for process improvement, cost and CO2 emissions reduction and waste elimination.
- Provides support to the CertainTeed Roofing Sustainability Central Team and the local teams in Sustainability initiatives to reduce energy and water consumption and CO2 emissions.
- In close collaboration with the Glass Mat Training Supervisor, creates the appropriate people development environments and tools to expand and consolidate the know-how in Glass Mat product and manufacturing.
- Invests in his/her own education to become the next Glass Mat Subject Matter Expert for CertainTeed.
- Works closely with the Glass Mat Quality team to handle customer complaints.
- Oversees and facilitates the relationship between the glass mat plants and the Corporate functional groups: Engineering, WCM, Purchasing, and R&D.
- Leads raw materials and finished product trials at the Glass Mat plants
- Supports the Glass Mat Quality Team for Product Qualifications for Customers.
Qualifications & Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferable in Pulp and Paper or Nonwoven, or in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or experience in Glass Mat manufacturing.
- Three to five (3-5) years of applied professional experience in a Glass Mat or Paper manufacturing environment.
- Understanding of project management and project engineering fundamentals. Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability in problem analysis and resolution.
- Must have good "interpersonal skills" to work effectively with personnel throughout all levels of the organization.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Advanced computer skills with emphasis in Microsoft Office Programs.
